We'll be talking generally about GCU's SL initiative - CU There - and discussing some of the pilot teaching projects that are currently taking place within GCU. We'll report on some of the different pedagogies the projects use, and look at the emerging results and issues from the projects where we have already had students in-world. We'll also touch upon staff development and student induction. And then we'll take a peek at a potential future for 3D technologies...

Hey, thats us, that is!

Now published on Virtual Worlds Watch, the [infamous] podcast interview of Ferdinand & This is a one year postgraduate programme, delivered online, for future and in-service teachers who want to use innovative methods and tools to address learners motivation and participation issues in compulsory education. What impact can 3D virtual worlds, such as Second Life, really have on our learning and teaching settings?
http://muvenation.org/about/programme-description/

The course is free, but there are only 80 places. Participants will receive a formal letter or certificate of completion from their assigned institution For a full overview of the programme description and objectives please visit. We have four levels of participation - from the full course to those who are more experienced and would like simply to observe and participate in discussions
http://muvenation.org/about/programme-description/

The programme will be taking place in Italy, United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Belgium and France. If you are interested in participating then please see the registration details here on the site, the closing days for applications is the last week in October.
http://muvenation.org/participate/

We look forward to hearing from you,
The MUVEnation team

"Let's junk the myths and celebrate what we've got"

An article in the Grauniad by Jeff Jarvis - http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/sep/29/digital.media.new "Let's junk the myths and celebrate what we've got"

Yes, good, excellent...but he doesn't go nearly far enough. His 'complaints' are farily minor, and we've had all these about Web 2.0 & Second Life, but just look at some of the others we've received recently about SL - scantily clad women, porn, sexist, racist, unaccessible, as well as, yes, more minor complaints that we hear with each new technologuy that comes along - it is too technology hungry, it is uncontrollable ("can we stop the students from going to x, y, z?"), it is impossible to police, it is flash-in-the-pan, it is a game with no educational value....

So, can we junk these myths in the way that Jeff Jarivs does? Will your next poster session be in Second Life ®?

A relatively balance view, and easy read, on using 3D environments for Scientific discourse, though the ideas and thoughts are applicable to any subject considering using the technology for teaching and learning.

The author concludes:
"As with any new technology, there are issues that could have an impact on the usefulness of online communication and its acceptance within the scientific community. Scientists who rely on peer-reviewed data for their work might find Web 2.0's lack of proofreading unacceptable to document research findings. However, we should explore the existing and potential applications of virtual communication for unique ways to discuss ideas, answer questions, educate and debate. Our ability to understand what we can accomplish in online worlds depends on our collective experience with the technology. The more scientists and clinicians who work with and comprehend the applications of virtual worlds for their respective research fields, the sooner we will realize how this technology can be best applied. The next step is to invite ourselves into these online realms, experiment with what they have to offer, and see where our exploration and creativity takes us."

See the full text at: http://www.nature.com/embor/journal/v9/n6/full/embor200886.html

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://atasteofsecondlife.blogspot.com/2008/07/scientific-discourse-20-will-your-next.html' title='Scientific discourse 2.0. One stream of the (RL) conference was 'Spaces'. The organisers had set up combined sessions, where SL delegates led a couple of discussions exploring how Inqury based learning may be supported by use of virtual spaces...or even the other way around, how being in a virtual space can instigate IBL. A stimulating morning, well run and well done in SL. (We decided that taking part in SL was more socially interactive than in RL, where we got to know a small group much better than we usually can do in RL!)
Sheila created a wiki to support the conference. This has been developing from before it started as well as during, and is still developing now as delegates reflect.

http://networked-inquiry.pbwiki.com/About+LTEA2008+in+Second+Life.
Chatlogs will be posted soon.

I think one of the main things that came out of this for me, that I'll be following up pretty soon was triggered by Sheila's comment about the 'natural cues' in SL, that were being overrided by the animations we were all using when sitting in the initial spot. Given the emerging practice associated with virtual worlds, the conference committee are also keen to receive papers reporting on the experience of learning and teaching using virtual worlds that relate practice and outcomes to literature and research in this area. We anticipate that submissions will reflect a range of research methods and will examine issues such as rigour, methods of sampling, relationships between researchers and researched, and the ethics and politics of the research process.
Please find more details at the website on http://www.open.ac.uk/relive08
